The Green Police Eco-Whacky Audi spot during the Super Bowl, by Jerry Hart

audi-green-policeThe global warming industry is imploding from scientific scandals, inconvenient weather, economic anxiety and surging popular skepticism (according to a Pew Research Center survey released in January, global warming ranks 21st out of 21 in terms of the public’s priorities).

I guess a 21st ranking is enough for Audi to spend a million + bucks to persuade you during the SuperBowl

The moral of the story is that we should welcome our new green tyrants and, if we know what’s good for us, surrender to the New Green Order.

Audi’s “Green Police” depicts an America where citizens are arrested — roughly — for even minor environmental infractions. A man at the supermarket asks for a plastic shopping bag and has his head slammed against the counter as he’s cuffed by a Green Police officer. “You picked the wrong day to mess with the ecosystem, plastic boy,” quips the cop. When officers find a battery in the wrong suburban garbage bin, one big cop yells, “Battery! Let’s go! Take the house!”

Some eco-bloggers disliked the ad because it reinforces the association of undemocratic statism or PC bullying with environmentalism. Perhaps that’s why the New York Times dubbed it “misguided.”

Meanwhile, some conservatives didn’t like it because it makes light of what they believe is actually happening. After all, in America and Europe, the list of environmental crimes is growing at an almost exponential rate. The ad is absurd, of course, but not nearly as absurd as Audi thinks.

What was Audi’s intent? Presumably, to sell cars.

“The ad only makes sense if it’s aimed at people who acknowledge the moral authority of the green police,” writes Grist magazine’s David Roberts on the Huffington Post. The target audience, according to Roberts, are men who want to “do the right thing.” He’s certainly right that the ad isn’t aimed at people (whom he childishly mocks as “teabaggers”) who worry that their liberties are being slowly eroded.

Being green and reckless are not a match

text-messaging-lawsThirteen states outlaw text messaging now.

I think it should be every state, and the crazy part is I love to text behind the wheel.

I’ve heard some blaming the government gaining more control.

I think it’s one of the most obsessive habits I’m dealing with behind the wheel.

How do cops know you’re text messaging? Reckless driving? Actually seeing the person texting behind the wheel?

The awful crashes from trains, planes and automobiles all over the country should speak volumes to banning humans from exercising stupidity.

No matter how clever I can be at multi-tasking, like I’m fast finger Freddie, ah…..no…I don’t think so.

The average person texts for durations that are equivalent to driving the distance of a football field. Can you imagine how much time that is to, let’s see, take out a group of people on the sidewalk, hit a pole, drive into a Walmart, steer a massive train into another?

Then you combine texting with a provocative smart car dilemma and the results are shocking.

Driving the green freeway of love a little slower now

As a new guy to green, driving the green freeway of love, well… my speeding habits may be catching up to me.

Yesterday I was just talking to a friend about Sammy Hagar and his smash hit from the 80’s, “Can’t drive 55″. The rock star was also the first person to update the first roadway speed sign of millions across California that went up 10 miles per hour from 55 to 65 in the mid 80’s.sh-55

“Hey Sammy, can you come back out to drop those signs back to 55?  Looks like his song could soon live up to what is a more safe and green approach to saving lives.  The news is the U.K. wants to lower their speed limits by 10 miles per hour on the freeways and another 10 mile an hour reduction on two lane roads.

Life usually has three major elements, among many others, that we humans care about. Time, Money and Love. I sure notice how a perception of time compression gets me to push on that pedal a bunch more and has me pumping my brakes a whole lot less. What do we do to stop the habits of speeding? Sometimes I wonder if I’m addicted to the race, the thrill that we often see kill.

Do we really have to get there 2 seconds sooner to only get stopped by a red light that put you on the same schedule as everyone else that abides by the law?

How many times do you chuckle at some meatball who thinks they are really getting there faster? Well, that meatball we consider flipping the finger to or even better, shaking our head in their direction, will be forced to slow down. New laws in America?… at least not yet, instead new laws are about to begin across the pond. We ought to look at these stats below and think about contacting our government and advising we lower our speed limits. Funny thing is the public is not happy with the U.K wanting to reduce speed.

Cuts would save lives, though.

The majority of UK motorists are opposed to the Government’s plan to cut the national speed limit from 60mph to 50mph on a two-way roads, according to a new survey.

The survey, carried out by MSN, revealed that 83% of the 40,554 people polled rejected the Government’s plans to cut speed limits from 30mph to 20mph in urban areas and from 60mph to 50mph in rural locations.

The National Audit Office recently released a report that showed 20mph zones helped cut pedestrian accidents by 29% and collisions involving cyclists by 63%.

britianI’ve noticed a pattern of which initiatives seems to be getting more attention. Over in Europe, it’s green cars, solar power and lenient smoking laws. Sure, Britain banned smoking in bars and public restaurants last year, yet many U.K countries have not joined their Britain friends in kickin’ the butt to the curb.

In the U.S., it’s the reverse. America is tough on smoking but pathetic at manufacturing green cars. Our solar power is not as robust and mainstream as it could be, however, as I blogged about last week, the spectacular developments of laser technology to generate energy is about to change history and it’s one amazing story to follow.

Looks like both countries, U.S. and Britain have some green culture affinities, yet so very different. It’s almost bizarre because there is no answer as to why the differentials between the U.K and the U.S are so polarized.

I still don’t understand why it took so long to get text messaging on our cell phones in the U.S.

Europe was texting a decade ago. That was nuts and I never did understand why America, who once was leading the world has one incredible opportunity to remain bright shinging examples of innovation and deep respect for our planet.

How will we be a green America?

I  don’t know about you, but the reason I’m making so many changes in my life to live more authentically is due to our climate change. Much more than weather, I’m talking about all of it, government, economy, religion, family relationships, the whole enchilada has changed. Everything we believed in just 12 months ago looks, tastes, or smells very different to me.

Today we lost General Motors. How are you feeling?

gm-logo

100 years ago this year, the founders of General Motors convinced the world to give up their horses and saddles and buggy whips to try a new form of transportation. We enjoyed the car hops at the A&W. We made out in the front — and the back — seat. We watched movies on large outdoor screens, went to the races at NASCAR tracks across the country, and saw the Pacific Ocean for the first time through the window down Hwy. 1. And now it’s over. It’s a new day and a new century. The President — and the UAW — must seize this moment and create a big batch of lemonade from this very sour and sad lemon.

Oh I’m not bitter,  only some questions for GM.

Didn’t you refuse to build automobiles that the public wanted, cars that got great gas mileage, were as safe as they could be, and were exceedingly comfortable to drive?

GM, didn’t you stubbornly fight environmental and safety regulations?

If we allow the shutting down and tearing down of our auto plants, we will sorely wish we still had them when we realize that those factories could have built the alternative energy systems we now desperately need. And when we realize that the best way to transport ourselves is on light rail and bullet trains and cleaner buses, how will we do this if we’ve allowed our industrial capacity and its skilled workforce to disappear?

And now questions for our President.

Shouldn’t we immediately convert our auto factories to factories that build mass transit vehicles and alternative energy devices?

President Roosevelt did after the attack on Pearl Harbor. Within months in Flint in 1942, GM halted all car production and immediately used the assembly lines to build planes, tanks and machine guns. The conversion took no time at all. Everyone pitched in. The fascists were defeated.

Since I’m the newbie to the green world here, I say this without having done a ton of homework on how toxic our American cars can be. The things we call “cars” may have been fun to drive, but they are like a million daggers into the heart of Mother Nature. To continue to build them would only lead to the ruin of our species and much of the planet.

Solutions Mr. President.

  1. Japan is celebrating the 45th anniversary of its first bullet train this year. Now they have dozens of them. Average speed: 165 mph. Average time a train is late: under 30 seconds. They have had these high speed trains for nearly five decades — and we don’t even have one! The fact that the technology already exists for us to go from New York to L.A. in 17 hours by train, and that we haven’t used it, is criminal. Let’s hire the unemployed to build the new high speed lines all over the country. Chicago to Detroit in less than two hours. Miami to DC in under 7 hours. Denver to Dallas in five and a half. This can be done and done now.
  2. Have the GM plants produce energy efficient clean buses.
  3. Start making those electric cars - lots of them (do not believe anyone who tells you it will take years to retool the factories — that simply isn’t true).
  4. Tax credits for being green. Also, credits for those who convert their home to alternative energy.

I’m tired now from this post… filled with so many feelings. Oh, one more question

How will we be a green America if we’ve allowed our industrial capacity and its skilled workforce to disappear?

How do we know if National Bike Day was successful?

Do you watch TV sometimes and think, “Glad that’s not me”. Today is National Bike Day and it’s the first time I’ve stopped to give it a moment of attention. At first I used to judge and criticize people that participate in what I thought was a bit purists for my taste.  bike-feel-great

Today,  I’m pledging to myself to leverage this “I am living large with a green view of life now” and get on my bike for play in the month of May.  Last time I peddled my lanky legs on my bike was a year ago. I loved it, so why not spice up my life to add some green flavor across this most beautiful Bay Area.

Today, all over the news I’ve seen thousands of really cool people getting on their bikes. Now that’s what I call being green. They have excited me to step out of my work from home, isolated type of lifestyle that binds me to my computer.
vistaptenergizer
Cities all over the nation participate, however my hometown, San Francisco really gets green and has set up Energizer Stations so that people can stop in on their morning and evening commutes. The energizer stations have food, red blinky lights and reflective leg bands.

I didn’t see many kids participating and wonder why? Most children are driven to school in cars or buses, and one child out of every 4 is overweight. It’s probably hard for parents to coordinate the bike ride to numerous schools and to work. Maybe we petition for a “Bike to School” day. Do we have one of those?  Since 1956, May has been recognized as National Bike Month. The third week in May is designated Bike to Work Week; and the third Friday of May is Bike to Work Day. I say we double up the third week and add “Bike to School” along with “Bike to Work”.

How do we know if National Bike Day was successful?

I found some data from Denver saying that  in 2008 over 10,352 people tried biking to work for the first time during a city-sponsored event.

I know for me to feel successful I will stick to my pledge of riding once a month and find a biker buddie thanks to a local social network with bike forums… http://www.sfbike.org/?bikebuddy

I’ll be using that link to local bike forums to find one.  If you’re not in the bay area, find your cities bike day site and look for a bike buddy forum. Best way to use a forum is to listen to what their saying, ask a few questions and I bet I’ll you find someone really cool to hold you accountable to getting on your green bike machine and reducing your carbon footprint.

I’ll keep my eyes and ears peeled for inspiration from the riders today to understand what motivates them.
I also want to know:
• How many people participated?
• What were their previous bicycling habits?
• What do they see as their future habits — will they ride more?

teamBetween you and me, we’ll know exactly if we DON’T or DO want to make biking an integral part of our life. This seems to be a pattern in my life lately,  where I am much more interested in balance of healthy physical activities. It’s changing my life, big time!

So, what do you think? If you commute from the shower to the office, like me, what are we going to do?

Summer is just around the corner and your diet sucks, your workout is non-existent, and you have zero time left in the day to remedy either one. Kidding. Of course, that’s not you or me.

What’s a potential workaholic like you or I to do? Well the first thing we humans do is make excuses that we must overcome.

I ’m out of shape
It takes too long
It’s too far
No bike parking
My bike is beat up
No showers
I have to dress up
It’s raining
The roads aren’t safe

I think we should add two more

I’m lazy
*I hate biking

*and there’s nothing wrong with thatbike-to-work-month
