Carbon neutral: the 'fairy tale' castle of Neuschwanstein

Carbon neutral: the 'fairy tale' castle of Neuschwanstein

Yes. We know from German folklore (think Hansel and Gretel, and Little Red Riding Hood) that the forest, or Wald, was an important part of life in Germany’s past. With forest still covering 31 per cent of the country – almost three times as much as the UK – the nation is deeply green.

It is also way ahead in terms of “green” issues. Germany recycles three-fifths of domestic waste compared to about one-fifth here; there are now only 150 landfill sites in Germany, compared with 50,000 in the early Seventies.

If you are choosing the nation at the heart of Europe initially for its environmentally friendly credentials, you are in for a treat in terms of the green and open spaces it offers. Germany has one-third more people than Britain, but the population density is lower and more rural.

Green Adventures in the Air with Jerry Hart on Smart Green Travel on Green 960 AM San Francisco

zepplin-comparisonHave you seen this behemoth white whale in the sky over the Bay Area? FYI, I was also informed we are not to confuse Blimps, with a Zepplin Air Ship. Yes, at the top of that illustration to the left, the AirShip nearly dwarfs our largest jumbo jets. The Zepplin company, that also built the Hindenburg, is not the same Airship our Great Grandpa’s engineered at the Zepplin plant back in 1925. And, it’s significantly Green, in many ways, one of the safest aircraft in the sky. Who knew? Blimps and Airships, how are they Green, and what’s the difference between the two?

The Zepplin is the largest, and only AirShip in North America, for the average Joe, like you and I, to see the Bay Area, like no other 360 degree visual experience possible.  Some have described it as a ‘personal cloud’ or ‘knowing what birds feel like’. Find out how Airships are a significant part of a post Green world, for example, right now,  one big-momma-of-a-Zepplin-Airship, is assisting in the clean up of our oil spill in the Gulf.

dead_041509_-1-5thThe Grateful Dead & The Rocky Mountains - What did the Grateful Dead do in Denver that didn’t happen in any other city?  Is Denver really that Green? Prove it!!! Ok, they did, on Smart Green Travel, it’s all Denver clocking in at #2 for the most Green city I’ve discovered, other than San Francisco.  Denver is sooooooooooo couscous to Being Green. Within just a one mile radius, there are three sports green stadiums, the country’s second largest performing arts complex, an assortment of art and history museums, a mint producing 10 billion coins a year, a river offering whitewater rafting, the country’s only downtown amusement park, a new world-class aquarium, more than 8,000 hotel rooms and more than 300 restaurants, most organic beer brewed per day than any other American city and of course, the music. What the Grateful Dead did in Denver, that’s historical, only on Smart Green Travel, with Jerry Hart.

Ernest Hemmingway once said that THIS BEACH was the World’s Best Beach - Best Green Beaches on Smart Green Travel on Green 960 AM San Francisco

National Geographic joins Smart Green Travel to reveal what is a Green Beach? Plus, I’ll share my Top 10 beaches, the ones to get too, before they become certified green.

I turned to the Clean Beaches Council, a Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit organization that runs the Blue Wave beach program in the U.S. to identify the top 10 beaches.

Are you tanning with a green conscious? Ready for some swimming, snorkeling, scuba diving, or none of that? Smart Green Travel is all about finding places where it’s just you and the sun - that’s all you need, huh?

I can see them, your buns planted firmly on a delightful beach, where the only oil you’re seeing is from a bottle with high SPF levels, so you can rub it on your legs.

For most beach-goers, assessing a beach is simple. Is the sand good for castle construction? Is ice cream readily available? Is the water warm and relatively jellyfish-free? If not, no problem–there are plenty of other beaches in the sea.

But what about a truly special beach? One with unique physical features–such as sand comprised of tiny, star-shaped shells or a stunning mountain backdrop–where the water is super clean and the sand isn’t in danger of vanishing because solid environmental management policies are in place? And let’s not forget the opportunity to swim with dolphins, snorkel over barrier reefs and spot birds and other local wildlife.

All ten beaches were chosen for their unique geologic features, innovative management practices and progressive environmental safeguards. None of them are currently designated Blue Flag or Blue Wave, for the most part because they haven’t been developed to the extent necessary for certification. We suggest you go before they are.

Click here for a look at a few of the world’s breathtaking beaches.

Are you a fan of Angel Island? TourismCares.org cleans up the island and hopes you can join their mission. Hear this amazing story of commitment to preserving our future.
