If part of the meaning of green embodies truth, then we know today, social media is a tool that empowers wisdom or truth of the crowd to project the message further and perhaps, more authentically than any agenda-based media publisher on earth could do on earth.
It’s been quite a day hasn’t it? Three icons leaving us in one week. Ed McMahon who I met in Milwaukee in ‘96 and he was a very nice man. Farrah Fawcett is gone now. She was so beautiful… and did you know she had the #1 selling poster in history? Hey, I had one. And, Michael is now on the other side. Wow!
So many emotions about Farrah and Michael dying on the same day and the pervasive use of social media to know what’s true. It’s more than irony to me.
Tantric Tweets and Frantic Facebooking prove the real story can get to you faster than traditional media.
Lindsay Lohan: NO OMG … sending my love and prayers out to Michael and his family … i feel sick..
Marlon Wayans: My prayers, my love, my heart goes out to michael jackson and the entire jackson family. I pray so hard for them. I’m crushed! Please pray.
Do you check the news online often? I do.
On Twitter, my Michael Jackson tweet was re-posted by friends many times over. Some just mere minutes after the news broke.
In the past, this type of news would have taken hours to get out to the general populace. Now every single person online today is a new influencer and has the ability that only news reporters and media had earlier. Its a phenomena.
Only in a social media controlled world would we see a Twitterized “revolution” in Iran, and the breaking news (or perhaps a hoax) of Michael Jackson’s death. Again, no news outlets have reported on Jackson dying from the heart attack as of 6:20 pm EST.
Just 30 minutes after the news broke guess what the number one search being conducted on Twitter is RIP Michael Jackson. Twitter is quick! Check it out yourself by doing a real time search! We have already ‘tweeted’ this story along with the millions of others!
Facebook and Michael Jackson
Have a look at your Facebook newsfeed right now. Notice how many people have made this their status update? In my own account, 12 out of 15 updates were about Michael Jackson’s death. Never before have we all had an open forum to discuss events and items on our mind as we do now thanks to social marketing sites like this.
YouTube
YouTube was very slow today with video uploads tagged with MJ’s death. I guess when Google says Youtube is user generated content, they’re not kidding. Either, they took too long to approve the story as real or the story was so shocking it must have paralyzed an otherwise fired up video contributor to YouTube.
Less than an hour after his highly speculated death, Wikipedia already has a disclaimer on their site stating the Michael Jackson wiki page is about someone who recently died and that some information may not be accurate. They have also put a ban on any editing of the page. Who needs to wait for information anymore?
The big difference between these news items and the other deaths listed here is that there will be a much larger reservoir of knowledge to be spread to us all and many more voices speaking about it.
Back when Diana and Elvis died we still had just the traditional media outlets to depend upon.
Michael Jackson’s death is a very sad thing. But an event like this has clearly shown the power of social media and the evident rise we will all watch over the years to come.
Let the conspiracy theories begin - x1000 - thanks to social media and the widespread availability of information.
As we close, lets give one big welcome of applause for BING, Microsoft’s new search engine. As of 4.5 + hours after his death, there was no mention of even a rumor of his death. Say what?
Did Microsoft BING drop the ball in their coverage of the passing of Michael?
As a good literate American would say to bring us back on point...”Nonetheless”…..
Hart of Green would love to help the people like you understand that green is so much more than recycling, carbon foot prints, and solar power. I believe with all my heart that tips like these below are just the start to leveraging a green lifestyle that reaches way beyond what we stereotype in 2009 as green.
Green Social Media Awareness can be implemented as…
# Brand managers can now use social media as an integral part of marketing campaigns.
# Product developers can use social media for consumer intelligence. The idea that you have to spend tens of thousands to get limited information from focus groups is becoming outmoded.
# Public relations can look at the messages that they send and figure out how they can make them a) more interesting and b) more easily digested by the blogosphere and the networks.
# Customer service should be using social media to decrease call volume and increase customer satisfaction. Paying $35 per phone call to answer the same types of questions thousands of times isn’t helping anyone.
# Human resources can be using social media to convey what working at the company is all about, and they should certainly be using it to go find candidates with particular backgrounds.
